Jefferson City Shines Brightly
THE CITY OF JEFFERSON stands out when it comes to small Mid-Western cities. After all, it is the capital city of Missouri; it is located in the center of the state; and, generally speaking it's in the center of the nation. Further, Rand McNally - the map people - have named it America's "Most Beautiful Small Town."
Several other Missouri cities are larger, but really Jefferson City is not so small. With a population of 43,079 in the 2010 census, the city keeps on growing. Now, the estimated number of residents is around 50,000 and covers almost 38 square miles, not counting the surrounding suburbs.
The city is named for Thomas Jefferson, the 3rd president of the United States. Another interesting fact: Lewis and Clark passed by the bluff where the future capitol would be located during their journey west on the Missouri River.
Jefferson City is also the county seat of Cole county, and is home to the Christopher S. Bond U.S. District Court House.
In addition, the city takes pride in its educational systems. The combined total of both public and private schools are impressive: 18 elementary schools; 4 middle schools; 3 high schools; 1 business school; and 4 colleges and universities with a presence in the city. Lincoln University, a public land-grant institution, was founded in Jefferson City in 1866 and offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in numerous fields.
Opportunities abound for recreation and leisure activities. The Jefferson City Park Board has won several awards through the years for its parks, programs, and facilities.
There are a couple of good reason to trumpet Jeff City. First, I lived there for nine years; and second, I returned for visits numerous times over many years in order to see family and enjoy the city. And, I still do. So, in my mind, "Jeff" does indeed shine brightly as a great place to live - or to spend a few hours or days as a tourist or vacationer.
