The Quieter Side of Destin
By Linda Lawson Still, guest writer
The multitudes who flock to Destin, Florida, for spring break and summer vacations would experience a quieter side of the town and its beaches during the winter months.
Days are shorter, weather is cooler and the visitors are older. A quick survey of license plates shows vehicles of visitors from Canada, Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Missouri and many other colder places. Most are retirees escaping the cold, ice and snow of their home states. Many bring their dogs along. Destin has many pet-friendly houses, condos and apartments.
Beginning as early as 6 a.m. people are outside walking along the wide sidewalks of Scenic Highway 98, enjoying the beauty of the sunrise and the beaches. Golfers head out to one of the many courses nearby. Groups of old and new friends congregate at the coffee shops and restaurants. By noon on warmer days a few tourists are playing beach volleyball and others, building sand castles. Some have settled in beach chairs near the water to read and enjoy the sun. Bikes, motorcycles and golf carts are the preferred mode of travel for many.
Many visitors practice other hobbies during their Destin vacations—photography, art, knitting and crochet, or keeping a journal. Shopping is the preferred hobby for many and there are plenty of choices, including outlets. Also, most winter visitors like to check the weather in their hometowns and celebrate the fact that they’re not shoveling snow or bundled up in winter clothes. While a few restaurants close for parts of the winter, plenty are open and draw crowds.
If you wonder if you can wait until the last minute to book accommodations for a winter vacation, the best answer is no. Even though the number of vacationers is smaller, the premium beachfront locations are booked months ahead. Returning winter vacationers reserve their preferred places a year ahead. Google Destin vacation rentals and you’ll find many choices. For most, you can check their availability online for your preferred dates.
Perhaps the best benefit of a winter vacation in Destin is the time away from home to rest and recharge in order to return home better equipped to face the opportunities and challenges of life.

AUTHOR’S NOTE: My husband and I spent our fifth February in Destin this year. It was extra special because I got reconnected with Larry Jackson who hosts this blog and was the first recreation minister at my home church decades ago when I was in high school. Larry made a huge impact on my life, encouraging me in my calling to a church related vocation. When my husband, Pat, and I joined Larry and Kay for lunch and conversation at Lulu’s in Destin, it was like we had never been apart. I am grateful for Larry’s mentoring and encouragement and know that I am only one of many whose lives he has impacted throughout his career.
