The nickname refers to the fact that Pensacola has been governed by five nations: Spain, France, Great Britain, the United States of America, and the Confederate States of America. Pensacola was first settled in 1559 by Tristan de Luna from Spain. Thereafter, the three European countries competed for Pensacola until 1821 when Americans took control. The CSA governed briefly in 1861-62.
Pensacola's population was estimated at 53,088 in 2014. The greater metropolitan area surrounding the City in Escambia County had an estimated population of 461,000. In area, the City's boundary is nearly 40 square miles - including 22.7 square miles of land, and 17 square miles of water.
Opportunities for recreation abound in Pensacola! Activities for all ages keep local residents and visitors alike happily busy during free-time hours throughout the year. The beach is always a big draw. Fun in - and on - the water attracts thousands. Museums, like the Pensacola Naval Air Station which is home of the Blue Angels, and other cultural activities are also highly popular. For example, the City is home to the Southern League's "Blue Wahoos," the Double-A baseball affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds.
