A Leisure Destination Down-Under

AMERICA'S ONLY ride-through cave is Fantastic Caverns. It is located off Missouri Highway 13 just a few miles northwest of Springfield at 4872 North Farm Road 125. The cave is considered one of the gems of the Ozarks. It is an underground treasure for both nearby visitors and tourists from far-away places. It is an ideal choice as a top-notch leisure destination - even if only as a place to unwind for an hour or two.
.
There are a total of about 5600 caves in the State of Missouri. Of this number, only 18 are open for visitors and only one can accommodate a ride-through tram: Fantastic Caverns. This particular cave was discovered in 1862 by a farmer and his dog. It was first explored in 1867 by a group of 12 women from Springfield.
.
It is believed that the cave was created by an ancient underground river. The water took a winding path and eventually, over a very long period of time, carved-out what has become Fantastic Caverns.
.
This leisure attraction is well-suited for all age groups, and it is a comfortable spot to spend some free time in any season. The cave is cool in the summer, and warm in the winter. Temperature readings hover at 60 degrees year-round. Because of the unique ride-through feature, Fantastic Caverns is a place which is convenient for physically challenged individuals, senior adults, and parents of small children.
.
Trams at Fantastic Caverns leave every 20 to 30 minutes on their underground journey. Tours are an hour in length. The cave is open for business seven days a week on a year-round basis - except for Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. The daily schedule begins in the morning at 8; closing varies between 4 and 8 p.m. depending on the season. Later closing times are in effect during the summer, and shorter open hours are scheduled during the winter months.
.
Various educational programs are planned each year for the cave's visitors. These special events include CSI (Cave Science Investigators), Summer Discovery, and Student Field Trips.
.
Current admission prices at Fantastic Caverns are $21.50 for adults, and $13.50 for children from ages 6-12. Children age 5 and under are free when accompanied by adults with paid admission. Season passes are available for $5 more than the cost for a one-time entry to the cave. Additional information is available by calling the Caverns at 417-833-2010.
.
Based on my own personal opinion, Fantastic Caverns is a leisure destination where you get a lot of bang for your buck! Traveling through this underground jewel is astounding. I have soaked-in the Fantastic Caverns experience many times over the years, and I have never - ever - been disappointed.
